Richmond’s bill did receive support from some of the more established, mainstream environmental organizations. The Environmental Defense Fund, National Audubon Society, National Wildlife Society, and other groups said in a joint press release last year, “We thank Congressman Richmond for his commitment to the critical restoration needs of coastal Louisiana… It is important that coastal producing states are also well-equipped to ensure the sustainability of coastal communities and ecosystems.”

Karen Gautreaux, The Nature Conservancy's director of government relations, said scientists have long been curious about the possibility of using the Old River Control Structure for more than flood control.
"Even when there's not a flood, it's being managed for flood control," said Gautreaux. "The Sustainable Rivers Partnership is asking the question: can we manage the Old River flow for nature when flood control is not needed?"

La. approved for $200M+ in Deepwater Horizon oil spill settlement funds for coastal restoration projects
Louisiana has been approved for $234.6 million in funding as part of the settlement from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill for coastal restoration projects in Plaquemines and Terrebonne parishes.
